    OLD HOUSES
The houses were made of stone and mud and the roof was made of strong sticks and tough sods called"scraws"and it was thatched. There was a large fireplace and the crook was hung on a large strong stick in the chimney.
Most of the houses were thatched. The thatch was made from straw.
In houses where there was only one room there was a bed in the kitchen in a corner. The beds were called settle beds. When there was only a room and a kitchen, the fireplace was in one side of the wall. The front of the chimney was usually made of clay and wattles and it is called the brace.
Some of the houses had no chimney but there was a hole to let the smoke out.
