    It happened that when St Patrick was crossing over the mountains from Clogher he became hungry.

    covered the hill-head. It was salt: Thus the name the hill of the salt.
    It is said that even yet the grasses on that bald hill top are salty to the mouth and that on summer evenings a white patch appears on the very spot the saint knelt down to pray. Cattle thrive there as in no other part of the district and tradition has it that famine can never be known in the wee townland where St Patrick suffered hunger and was fed from the mountain stream and from Heaven.
