- Long ago, Mr. Thomas Eyre was the landlord in Freshford. His family came from Berkley Square, London about the year 1879 and remained in the district for about forty years. He had a large desmene in Uppercourt Freshford. When he died, his son Stanislaws, was landlord after him and he also lived in Uppercourt.
Thomas Eyre built the Girls' and Boys' School in Freshford. This landlord had an agent who gathered the rent half-yearly. Many years ago, an agent named Mortimer was killed at the chapel corner, Freshford, by a man who had no money to pay the rent.
There are only two landlords in Freshford at the present time, Mr. Edward Maher, The Square, Freshford and Mr. Staunton, Bridge St., Freshford.
Mr. Maher bought the land from Mr. Eyres. The land was not divided into farms nor was the land sub-divided among members of families on marriage. The landlord did not exercise any special powers over his tenants nor(continues on next page)
