    according to the value of the animal. When a bargain was made the parties concerned showed agreement by striking their closed fists on their open hands. Animals are generally marked by branding the initials of the owner on the animal, or by clipping the hair with a scissors. The halter or rope is kept by the original owner and the buyer of the animal has to buy another halter and put it on the beast.
    Cattle, sheep, horses, and young pigs or bonhams are sold at the monthly fairs which are held on the second Wednesday of the month in Kilkenny. Pig fairs are held on the previous Tuesday.
    There are no local traditions of fairs held formerly on hills, in cemeteries, or in castles or forts.
