   procured by applying the juice of the sow-thistle to the warts. Some use the juice from the roots or stems of the dandelion The cure for styes on the eyelids is described on the opposite page.

   Extract of male fern roots was used as a purgative. Aged people had great belief in this medicine and it was usually taken in Spring immediately after the sap in the fern commenced to move.

   An ailment or complaint locally know as "foul mouth" (thrush) can be cured by requesting a man or boy who was born subsequent to his father's death, to breath seven times on the affected part and then reciting certain prayers.

   Cures for burns and scalds are handed down to certain members of families. All that is necessary to affect a cure in this case is to request the person who possesses the cure to prescribe some cure. They usually make up a bottle of lime-water and linseed oil, in equal proportions. The prescription must be compounded by the person supposed to possess the cure. The lime-water must be made from ordinary lime found in a local kiln.
