  1. Riddles
Long ago in this country the people used to be heard with old riddles around the fireside at night. Such people had no other amusements but some of them had gramophones. The following are some of the riddle.
Riddle me, riddle me right where did you sleep last, where the cocks never crew, where the winds never blew, where the bells of heaven never struck eleven, through a rock, through a reel, through an old spinning wheel, through an old bag of pepper, through an old horse's shin bone, riddle me that or let it alone.
    Answer. Flies.
A handless man had a letter to write he who wrote lost his sight the dumb repeated word for word and deaf was the man who listened and heard.
    Answer. A lie.
"Under earth I am, on ivy leaf I stand I rode the mare that never was foaled and I carried the dam in my hand."
    Answer. A whip.
