- In my district potatoes are grown extensively in fact they are main crop of the smaller-class farmer. My father sows about an acre and a half every year. The names of the different kinds he sows are as follows:- Epicures, Irish Queens, British Queens, Kerrs Pink, Arran Banner, Northern Champions, Americans Roses, Jenny Deans and Duke of Yorks.
Long ago the people used to use wooden-ploughs. They were shaped like an ordinary plough only the wooden one had to "loys" and a wooden handle. The farmers who could afford to buy a plough used a spade. I will now describe how the potatoes are sowed.
First of all the ground is ploughed up and if the ground was tilled before it is formed into drills. The ground that was never tilled before is called lea, and in this my father makes four-sod ridges.
He then sticks the potatoes and afterwards puts farmyard manure on them.
When he sees the first sight he shakes artifical manure on them. In July he sprays(continues on next page)- Collector
