  1. In 1245 the castle of Sligo was erected by Maurice Fitzgerald and eight years later in 1253 he built Sligo Abbey which he gave to the Dominican Order.
    In 1414 the abbey was ruined and then it was rebuilt .
    The abbey is situated in the town of Sligo in Abbey Street , Thomas Street and as far as the riverside.
    The interior of the ruin measures in length 132 feet but it was probably much longer as the eagle facing the West has entirely disappeared .
    The abbey also contains a choir or chancel
