  1. The wild birds which are to be found in my district are the swallow, the wood-pecker the pheasant, the wild-duck, the wood-cock, the plover, the pigeon, the grouse, the curlew, the barnacle and several other species. Some of these birds migrate while others never leave this country. The birds that migrate are the cuckoo, the swallows and the barnacle and some people say that the corncrake migrates while others maintain that he remains here all the winter in a state of torpor.
The cuckoo lays its egg in an other bird's nest and because it is so lazy all the other birds look upon it as an enemy. They chase it from tree to tree and it has often to go into the groves and woods to escape them. There is a poem connected with the cuckoo which runs as follows.
    "In April come he will,
In May he sings all day,
In June he changes his tune,
In July he gets quite shy,
    In August go he must."
