  1. The most common superstition of long ago is stealing butter of the churning.
Once upon a time there was a woman churning and if she was churning yet there would be no butter on it. At last an old hag came in and told the woman she would get back her butter. She barred all the doors, and put a stone in the fire, and another under the churn. She heard a knock on the door, and a voice saying that she wanted a tub. They knew it was the woman that had the butter and they would not let her in, because if she got in she would bring it away again. So the woman churned on and got the butter.
