  1. Walking was a branch of sport not much practised in this parish, and there is no record of any good walker in recent years. But some time ago a man named John Sullivan who went by the name of Jack Doctor, walked to Cork (65 miles) and back home again in one day. It is still in record that having important business in Tralee he left Castlemaine one fine morning at about six o' clock and walked to Tralee (10 miles). The Gentleman he wished to see was gone to Killarney, so he walked the rail road to Killarney.
