Our school is situated on the Ballinleg or lower road which runs along the sea from Beltra to Dromore There is stirabout road in Dromore and this name was given to because the people made it during the famine times and those making it had nothing to eat but stirabout. There is a Hungry Rock road leading from the main Sligo - Ballina across the mountains. There is a huge flat rock at Coollaney called the hungry rock and when people be passing by it they throw a stone on it for fear they would get hungry. There is a track of a horses hoof in a stone in the road beside the Hungry Rock. It is supposed that a horse jumped down off the top of the Hungry Rock and left the track of his hoof in a flag in the road. There are two monuments at Beltra one in memory of Goff and the other in memory of Geoghan. Goff was captured by the Free state soldiers along with other boys. They were put up on a lorry and when they were going down at Beltra the lorry halted. Goff jumped off the lorry and went through the wood. The Free State Soldiers fired at him and killed him. During the Civil War in 1922. Geoghan and other republicans were bringing a motor load of arms from Ballina to Sligo. The Free State soldiers
