top of the house to the eave, the first bobbin is held in place by a skollop at its tied end and its loose end overlaps the one fixed in place before it. The thatcher has a very sharp knife with which he pears off the surface smoothly after each two or three streaks. The finishing off is carried out by binding the top of the roof well with a row or two of skollops. A line of skollops is also bound within a foot of the eave and the eave is trimmed evenly. Thatching carefully done in this way often lasted ten years.
