  1. Long ago there were no lamps in the country atall. Every body made his own candles out of rushes and grease and they cost him very little. First the big stout rushes were cut and peeled. Then they were tied in bunches and left up the chimney to dry. When they were dry there were steeped in grease and then they were left out to cool. Then they were ready for use.
