  1. About forty years ago there came a day and a nights rain which flooded the rivers and did great destruction. It carried off pits of potatoes that were along or near rivers and it swept a bridge on Croagh River, which rested at Knockánbán. It carried off cocks of hay and bearths of oats. It swept a bridge off Easkey River which was eighteen feet long and four feet wide. It swept sheep and cattle down to the sea. The sea came in on the land and carried in numbers of dead fishes. Next day as the floods were ceasing men and boys were gathering fish.
