- There is an old story that says March borrowed three days from April to skin the old cow. March said he would skin the cow and the cow said he would not. Off ran the cow and March after her. The month March was so determined to catch the cow that he borrowed three days off April to catch her. At last he caught the cow and skinned her on the third day. These three days are said to be the coldest in the year.
