to all appearance a harmless driveller, moping arround. This negligible individual passed for awhile through the assembled crowd but well posted on the duties he had to perform. He stole behind O'Reilly's back and pinioned his arms to his side as if caught in a vice, and before he could disengage himself Hume's men had O'Reilly gripped and made a prisoner.
The news of O'Reilly's arrest under such conditions caused a storm of indignation arise but the people were in such a state of inertia and prostration that no man was left to liberate their great hero.
The following lines were pinned by a local poet of the time to commerorate this event:
"The groves of Killeshandra no more will grow green
nor the warbling thrushes no more will they sing
nor the trout in Lough Oughter no more will spawn.
Since the downfall of O'Reilly called Paddy Seán Bán."
Humes' end was dreadful, the flesh was eaten off his bones whilst living by a strange species of worm and tradition states that this was punishment meted out to him for his mis-deeds.
