- The Loca ForgesThere are four forges in this parish. The names of the smiths that work in them are John Cavanagh, Peter Rourke, Roddy, and Mc Inearny. The Roddies have been blacksmiths for four generations and the O' Rourkes for two generations. This is the first generation for Cavanagh and Mc Inearny. Mc Inearny's forge is beside a crossroads and all the rest have their forges beside the road. Some of those forges have walls built of stone and others of concrete. The roofs are generally thatched or boarded as iron roofs would not suit a forge. None of those forges have more than one fireplace. The bellows are fixed on the side of the fireplace having a long arm. By moving this arm up and down the bellows are filled with air, this air is driven underneath the fire and makes it blaze very brightly. The implements which the smith uses in his work are a large sledge, a hammer, a rasp, a pincers a chisel, an anvil, a punch and a knife.
