- Cloone though very small is very historical. During the rebellion of 1798 the French army under the command of General Humbert encamped in a field near the Catholic church Cloone. Ever since this field is known as the "Lamp Field".
They made their way to Ballinamuck in Co Longford where they fought a fierce battle. Next day when the French were about to start on their way to fight another battel the chains by which the cannons were drawn could not be found.
