    This proves the fame which this Abbey attained as a seat of learning. The monks taught there up to the time of the Cromwellian invasion. Even Cromwells powerful cannon were not able to shatter these buildings. They were unroofed as a result of his attack but the strong walls survived. The stone stair way in one of the Abbeys is specially admired by builders and those interested in the structure of houses. The second floor of this Abbey is still intact and resembles our modern cement floors. However it is well known that cement was not in use in Ireland in the early ages when this Abbey was built and the substance which made this floor so smooth and substantial still puzzles all visitors.
