day. On the night of the 31st December, a long stick is placed in the nearest river or stream, and the water level marked with a notch or tying of string. On New Year's morning it is examined, and if the water level rose during the night, through heavy rain, sleet or snow, it is said that prices of food would advance or soar during the New Year. Many old people have followed this custom and have proved the truth of the omen. Similarly if the night was harsh and dry and the water level fell during the night, food prices were supposed to fall during the coming year.
These are the principal customs carried out in this district during the New Year.
I got the above information from my father.
