- Lake of 365 Islands - the Western River Corrib has a history all of its own. In the thirteenth century a bitter conflict was raged between the Anglo-Norman Burkes and Joyces and the Irish O'Flaherties for possession of the lake and its islands, which formed the boundary between its territories. Orbsen, from whom the lake was named, was a mythical demigod.Among the Islands, Inishambo, or White Cow Island near Oughterard Pier is a lofty wooded islet with a quaint legend. Diarmaid O'Flaherty had an expedition across the lake against the Burkes, leaving his wife and family in Inishambo. His men were routed, and for several weeks the people on the Island were without food. The fairies however, whose sacred hill at Knockma had been preserved by Diarmaid's father, brought a white cow to the Island, and its abundant milk kept the O'Flaherties well and strong. At Inchiquin, the largest Island, St Brendan the Navigator founded a monastic settlement in his later years. St Furzey, apostle of Suffolk, was born there, leaving the island in 637 A.D.Inishmicatreer is connected with the adjacent mainland of Mayo, by a stone causeway and contains the ruins of a church and graveyard.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
