  1. Jack and his mother lived on the top of Creevelea mountain. The Winter's wind was blowing on the front of the house and the mother was always telling the son that he would have to cut the butt of the wind. After a long time she put him to the road. One morning before day-break he started weastward with his hatchet. He was walking fast to fulfil his mission when he met a man that stopped him and asked him where he was going. "Well sir" said Jack you may be the King of Connacht for all I know but my mother and my-self live on the top of that big mountain and the wind is continually blowing on the front of our house and I am going to cut the butt with my hatchet. "Well my good man" said the other man I have a great deal of corn to clean at present and if you return home as I tell you. I will give you this cow turning out a good one for him. Jack turned for home with his cow. He was proceeding will when all at once darkness fell upon him and he could not go any further. He saw a light in the distance and he went as far as it. He got a good supper and a good bed and a place for his cow
