    On "Chalk Sunday," the first Sunday of Lent, any old maid or bachelor who would not get married the preceding Shrove used be "chalks" either going to or coming from Mass. They used be pursued by boys and young men and a long stroke of chalk or "dó-buidhe" put along their backs. This used cause great laughter, though the persons to whom it was done did not at all like it. However they had to take it in good part.
    Easter Sunday seemed to be the feast of eggs. Young boys and girls had and still have, what they call a "cúbóg" that is, they make a fire out in a field or other suitable place, take out several eggs and boil them, or roast them at the fire, and then eat them.
