For Willie Adams kept good beer,
And Tommy Russel stabled there
His highly famed race-horse
Which at the Curragh of Kildare,
As fleet of foot as mountain hare
Had caused his master home to bear
Full many a heavy purse.”5. Bold Tom was there and ‘gan to boast
And shake the arm of mine host
Who, in his turn, did drink a toast
To Russell’s famous steed:
To Tommy Russell and the mare
That on the ‘Banks of Clady’ fair
So far renowned a foal did bear
For beauty and for speed.”6. The crowd applauds. Then from his seat
The rector staggers to his feet
‘To every horse’ quoth he, ‘tis meet
To grant his meed of praise
Then here’s a toast to Kelly’s mare
That follows hound and flying hare
And on her arching back doth bear
The man on whom you gaze.”7. This speech proud Russell’s ire did raise
For he would fain have all the praise
And straight he on the table lays
Of goodly pounds five score
“Now sir,’ quoth he, ‘that purse of gold
I’ll stake ‘gainst horse or mare e’er foaled,
E’er lost or borrowed, bought or sold
Around all Donaghmore.’”8. ‘And you’ he adds, with flushing face
‘Shall name the day, and starting place.
I care not, sir, how long the race.”
The rector bit his lip
And scanned the wild applauding crowd.
Oh! Could he be thus so easily cowed!
A huntsman gay, a sportsman proud
Would trust to sport and whip!”9. “Agreed! Agreed!” he proudly says –
The astonished crowd in wonder gaze.
The mare is worthy of the praise
Bestowed on her I ween
From Castlefin ride as you can
