- Our churn is made from hard oak and contains six iron hoops. The churn is three feet in height and one foot and a half across the top. When making the churn the oak is cut into strips and “left by” to season. When the oak is green it would be no good because the wood might shrink or separate and the milk would “leak.” The narrow part of the churn is called the crib or lagan. The churn-head is made from oak and the handle or staff is made from rows tree.We use the churn twice a week in the summer and less frequently during the winter.
