On the last day of October 1886 a heavy wind storm raged over Balina and caused much damage. The roof was completely blown off the large National School building and some of the timber and slates were carried a long distance away. Fortunately it happened on a Sunday evening and no one was injured. The lower part of the building accommodated over 300 boys and a like number of girls occupied the upper floor.
