    The old people used to say that a yard of a counter was much better than a hundred acres of land in former times.
    The people still buy goods after mass. Cattle and sheep were bartered about one hundred and fifty years ago. Labour was often in exchange for goods.
    If a man had a nice cow at a fair, another man would say to him, "how much de' want for that thing there?" pointing to the cow making little of her the way he would have her cheap. The owner would say twenty pounds maybe more.
    The buyer might not be pleased to give all that, then another man would say "split the
