- Hedge Schools 23-5-1938
There was one hedge school in our district long ago but there is no trace of it now. It was situated beside a lake in Derry Evry. They taught indoors in the Winter and outdoors in the Summer. School was sometimes in the farmers' houses. The teachers were paid every month and every child had to bring so much. The teachers were all strangers and they did not stay long. The subject taught was Latin.
The pupils wrote with a quill pen or on slates. The schools were built of clay and stones.
