- The local names of the roads are the Cavan road, Cootehill road, Carrickmacross road, Bailieborough road and the Kingscourt road. The Cavan road leads from Shercock through Cootehill to Cavan. The Cootehill road leads from Shercock to Cootehill. The Carrickmacross road leads from Shercock to Carrickmacross. The Bailieborough road leads from Shercock to Bailieboro. There are plenty of old roads made during the famine. There are old paths in the district. Before bridges were made rivers were crossed by planks and fords. These planks and fords were called "Keshes". Sometimes there are cross-road dances and idle people meet there to pass the time. On the Kingscourt road there is a cross put up to mark the place where a man was killed. In the time of trouble people put up monuments to make the place where people was shot.
