  1. There was an old hedge school on the side of Bruise Hill. The techer's name was Thomas O'Reilly. Later he built a small school on the summit of the hill and in eighteen hundred and thirty one it was regarded as a National School.

    Old Crafts
    The process of making linen was as follows:-
    The flax was pulled out by the hand and then "retted" i.e. put into a flax-hole of water and left there for about eight days. The husk which covered the fibre has then become soft and fermented. It was then stacked and allowed to dry and season thoroughly. It was then take to the barn to be "scutched". All the farmers gathered together for this process. The flax was laid on the floor and each man in turn beat it with a long stick. This removed the outer husk from the flax leaving a strong fibre. The "Shoves" or broken off husks were then used as feul for a fire.
    The house-wives then took the task
