Eggs are generally set in March and April.

Eggs are generally set in March and April. Fifteen eggs is the most common number in a setting. Very often eggs are exchanged to get a setting so that a different breed of fowl will be introduced. The eggs which are to be set are never washed as it is thought that washing closes the pores in the eggshell. Eggs should not be set until a day after they are carried so that they will have settled.
It is possible to tell whether there are birds in the eggs or not after nine days hatching. If the eggs are just in soft water at this time any egg in which there is not a bird will sink to the bottom of the vessel. Another means of testing them for birds is carried out after about a fortnight. The egg is held between you and a candle and it will be noticed that the food will have sunk from the top of the egg in which there is a bird.
The time taken to hatch hen eggs is about three weeks. An extra week is taken to hatch ducks and goose eggs.
