forced to drop the treasure. Next morning he went again but he could find no trace of where he dug for the treasure. It is said locally that a druid killed a man & told him to "Guard the crock of gold till the day of judgement", then he turned him into a cat.
The townland at present called "The big Tree" is so called because there was a very big tree growing there formerly. It was so big that a sow reared a clutch of bonhams in a hole in the trunk of the tree.
There is a well called Mount Vera well on the right hand side of the road leading from Cloghan to Birr and about a quarter of a mile from Cloghan. Tradition says that a saint was killed on the hill road Cloghan & that his head flew and lighted on the spot where this well is. That is how the well sprang up.
