   road was made as a relief work during the Famine, and the pay the men used to get was threepence a day or would sometimes get a bag of Indian meal. which consisted of only a pound weight.

   There are many old paths, or bye-ways in the district. In whitechurch there is an old bye-way called the "Boreen Lane" which leads to the forge.

   In former times before bridges became plentiful the rivers were crossed by of fords at shallow place.

   In years gone by the cross-roads weer the general places where the local dances were held and a couple of weeks before this event, a great many faggots were cut, and on the day of this occurrence they were all brought to the cross-roads and at night-time when the crowd gather, they would set them on fire to illuminate the place.

   On one occasion as one of those big dances were coming off, some men from the neighbourhood resolved to play a trick on the dancers,
