There are remaining in this District a few old houses of the kind most used in former times. They are thatched one storey houses with one, and sometimes two small narrow windows, and the thatching of these are done usually by the local thatcher with straw procured from farmers' haggards.The doors all have a half-door, and the floors are clay, and in some there is a bed fitted in the kitchen so as it can be used as a seat in the day time, and this is usually called a "Settle. The fire is usually fitted into the gable wall, and wood, bushes and coal are used for these fires.
In former times dips were used to give light at night.
