- Long ago the people were reared on oaten meal potatoes, porridge and buttermilk. They drank out of noggins or wooden mugs. They boiled the potatoes and when they were done, they lifted them and poured them on to a basket, which was left over a pot or bucket. Then they sat round the basket and peeled the potatoes wit their thumb nail and each one had his own noggin of buttermilk under his arm. In the olden times the people had no tea. They used porridge for their breakfast and supper.
