- Abbe Dearg - meaning the red Abbey.Before the Cromwellian Invasion, there was an Abbey or Convent in it, owed by the Cistercians.
At the present time the ruins of the old Abbey are still to be seen surrounded by a graveyard.
In olden times this Abbey gave shelter to about three hundred monks. The land around the graveyard is full of little hillocks supposed to be the remains of the building around the monastery.
The house which Mr Dan Garrahan occupies at present is about a quarter of a mile from the Abbey and is believed to have been the Scholastic house. The rooms in it are spacious as likewise the hall and the staircase. The land also around the Scholastic is hilly. The main road separates the Abbey from the field known as 'the Caldron'.
