- The famine began in 1845 and lasted till 1847. At that time people lived on potatoes because they had nothing else and when they failed people were very badly off. Mrs Brassill told me people were often out day after day and when they came home they had not as much as their supper because the potatoes were black from the blight and that was the cause of the famine. It did not effect some people because they had alot of money.
Mrs Brassill told me that Con Brassill her uncle had alot of money and her got the farm from his father. These people people lived at Spittle near Buttervant and were very poor. One morning when this(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
