  1. Lord Broghill, afterwards Earl of Orrery, third son of Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork was born in Lismore in 1621. At the beginning of the rebellion he was placed at the head of the troops which his father had raised among the English planters. For some time he acted under Parliamentary commanders; but the execution of Charles made him abandon his new companions in arms. Also, he was disgusted at the legal toleration granted to the Cathlic religion which he believed to be sinful against God and injurious to the state. He therefore left Ireland and withdrew to his seat in Somersetshire. After a while he determined to engage again in public life.
    Very soon after he received a letter from the exiled King, telling him that he had obtained two small ships to accompany him to Ireland, that he knew what great power the Boyle family had among the Protestants of the South, and would much desire his company. Broghill replied that he would soon pay a
