  1. Potatoes are grown on our farm About one acre is sown under potatoes each year, but the amount often varies according to the among of other crops grown or to the number of stock kept on the farm The farmer or his servant man prepare the ground with two ploughing horses tackled to the necessary machinery. Some farmers manure the potato ground in the Autumn and then prepare it in Spring. The majority however, do not manure it until they have the drills opened. Cottiers sow the potatoes in ridges and also some farmers for early potatoes. For the making of drills the ground must be ploughed, harrowed and rolled and this practice is repeated until the earth is fine enough to open drills. Ridges can be made either with a spade or with a plough. Wooden ploughs were used in ancient times but there are none left. Although spades are bought in a shop they can also be made by a black-smith in the forge.
Potatoes for seed are cut in parts. The parts with an eye are kept for seed and are known as "sciollán" and the culled part is called a "scollóg" and these are boiled for the pigs or given to other farm
