- Shops were not as common long ago as they are now. People long ago in this district bought their clothes in Kanturk or Newmarket, but they bought their tea and sugar and other things in the country shops. People bought their tea and sugar, and bread, salt herrings, and other things after Mass on Sundays.
Money was not always given of goods. Sometimes the people gave eggs in exchange for potatoes or turnips or cabbage. There was a huxter's shop in front of the school, owned by a woman named Peg Sheehan. She sold salt herrings, tea, sugar, bread and other goods.
