- There were many people living in this district before the time of the famine. In the district called "the Mountain" where nobody lives now there were many families living then and the old people point out where their houses were. The blight came in a fog and the old people used to say that a grey horseman came over the hills and spread the blight over the potato crop. The stalks of the potatoes blackened and withered and the potatoes rotted in the ground. The people had no seed to sow in the next year. Indian meal used to be given out to the poor people.
