Wolfhill school was the first National school built in this district after the hedge - schools. The Irish language was taught in the hedge - schools and the English wanted to do away with it. In some districts it was in the farmers' houses at night that the children were taught. Men and girls went to school in these times until they were twenty and twenty five years of age.
The hedge - schools which I am going to describe existed in the townland of Crossard which is in the parish of Ballyadams in the Barony of Rasthaspick in the County of Leix. There was one in Jim Duggan's yard and the other one was near Pat Dempsey's house in(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
