1. The Turf Crop

   One of the main occupations of the farmer in Summer is the cutting of the turf. This he does in the months of May and June, as turf are burned by all people in country houses. There are two kinds of burned mud turf and sléan turf.
   Sléan turf are much lighter than heavy turf, but they do not burn nearly so long. There are also two kinds of light turf, sléan and spade turf. Spade turf are always square when they are cut.
   It is very interesting to watch the farmers prepare their banks for the turf. First they cut off the heather, this they bring home to make beesoms. These are very good for sweeping floors.
   When the bank is clean the men start cutting the turf. This is done as follows. One man goes down into the hole and throws up the turf. He is known as the "slanesman". There is another man standing on the bank, he catches the turf, and places them on the barrow when
