“The potatoes are best sown on fairly good ground because they enrich the soil.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)The people used to make ridges always long ago they were made by the spade. The spades were made from wood fastened on the end with tin and they were very big. The ploughs were made from wood there was a steel bottom to them. Every place that there is a bit of potato bud it is cut out and called a slit of "scillen". They are spread with one foot between each slit. After they are sown they are moulded with the shovel. Then they are sprayed with bluestone mixed with washing soda. A few months after that they are dug sometimes the farmers get a machine that will dig by itself but if they have ridges they can't do that because the machine could not move if the machine was down in a hollow. Then the farmers make a hole down in the ground and put potatoes in it cover them with rushes and clay. Long ago there was starch extracted from the potato but the people are not able to make it now. There are a lot of different kinds of potaotes, champions, up-to-dates and Eclipse and many other kinds.- Bailitheoir
