  1. In olden times there was no such thing as going to the shop to buy bread because all the bread required was baked at home. There were three kinds of bread, oaten bread, potato cake and black bread which was used mostly during famine years. This bread was made from wheat which was ground by the people themselves. The flour (ground wheat) was then mixed with water and put on a flat tin griddle on top of the fire when this bread was baked it was of a dark gray colour so this is why it was called "Black Bread".
Oaten bread was made from oaten meal (ground in the mill) and water mixed to a thick dough. This was then placed on an open griddle (a griddle with a little shelf on the bottom of it on which the bread is left sitting. There is an easel at the back of this griddle to support it) in front
