  1. Once upon a time there lived a widow and her three sons Sean Seamus and Downaill. They lived in a wee kitchen on a small piece of land. They had three cows, two young ones and one old rickety thing. Seamus and Sean were two clever greedy lads and Downaill was a kind-hearted innocent lad.
    These two clever lads got married and went to live in their wives' homes. Each of them took a good cow with them and left the old rickety thing with Downaill and his mother. So the old cow died with vexation at being left alone. It happened to be a fair day in the nearest town so Downaill skinned the cow and brought the hide to the town. He tied a half crown in each corner of the hide, he went up and down the crowded streets drumming on the hide asking who would buy a hide full of half crowns.
