- (continued from previous page)The other islands of the lake are small and for the most part artificially constructed.The island beside the village of Gowna is artificial and is now known as Church Island.The second largest island in Lough Gowna is White Island. (I cannot account for the name).
Besides these we have Piper's Island and Bucky Island. Piper's island is probably called after some sea birds (sand pipers that frequent it)The names of all these island are very English in form but I think I can account for this. The inhabitants of the Lake shore are not natives in the real sense. They with very few exceptions are all newcomers of not a century standing. Their knowledge of things pertaining to water - waterfowl etc is strangely limited. They have very faint water traditions. A Sailor would style them "Land lubbers all".The fact is stated though and remains.
