    A very old custom here was passing the pipe.

    tell me why he believed this and he explained thus:-
    (1) The pipe must be broken in or smoked out when new.
    (2) It must be always kept clean
    (3) And most important regulate the "BLAST" When you see an old man smoking it is only at rare intervals he pulls. He barely keeps the pipe alive, draws an old blast and fills in the intervals with interesting conversation. The smoker of today is blasting all the time, and his smoking conversation is only a series of interjections
