- Near the village of Gowna when I was a boy lived an old man named Páid Carthy. On his own admission Páid was a Ribbon man - agin the Law, death dealer to Land Lords and their supporters and an enemy to the Proctors, and all they stood for. Páid told me of raids he was on around Brunere Mountain. he wand his comrades were disguised with straw and carried slónt sticks. A Pike was pushed into the ends of these sticks.
